His life was a rags to riches story. He was an outrageous character. He interacted with such a strange and varied collective of people. When recounted, Andy Warhol's life almost sounds like a work of fiction and yet he was real. Andy Warhol was an innovator, a character, and possibly one of the best things that ever happened to the art world.

Andy Warhol (nee Andrew Warhola) was born in a small Pennsylvanian town in 1928 to Slovak immigrants parents. He was a sickly child, suffering from chorea (a nervous system disease that manifests as involuntary movements of the arms and legs). Warhol's illness alienated him from his peers and he spent much of his time bed-ridden. During his long periods in bed, Warhol listened to the radio, drew, and collected pictures of movie stars, a practice that Warhol later claimed was very important in the development of his personality and artistic preferences.

Warhol showed a talent for drawing and painting early in life, which led him to eventually persue a degree in commercial art at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) in Pittsburgh. Warhol graduated in 1949 and quickly relocated to New York where he worked as an illustrator and commercial advertising artist for magazines.

While Warhol was commercially successful as an illustrator, it wasn't until the 1960s when Warhol began exhibition original artwork that he gained major attention. The appeal of his work lay in his ability to collapse the difference between fine art and the commercial arts. He started painting common objects like Campbell Soup cans and Coke bottles, touting them as fine art. The art community was intrigued, never before had someone elevated mass produced goods to such a level.

He soon became a famous figure in the New York art scene, mingling with a broad range of people from bohemian hipsters to debutants, Hollywood stars to underground artists. From 1962 on, Warhol started making what would eventually become some of his most recognizable and sought after work - silkscreen prints of famous icons like Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Muhammad Ali, and Elizabeth Taylor.

Although Warhol's popularity waned after the 1960s, his work remains iconic. The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, PA stands as a testimony to his enduring impact on the art community and reproductions, posters, and prints of his "celebrity" prints, Coke bottles, and Campbell Soup cans are still popular amongst art fanatics as well as the general population. Warhol will forever be remembered as an innovator and deservedly so.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4818726331789536855.post-61878974410811610902010-09-23T10:21:00.000-07:002010-09-23T10:28:28.194-07:00'Oxidation Painting (in 12 parts)' by Andy Warhol (1978) in high resolution<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 389px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_FpkvrKlCScY/TJuNS5TwLGI/AAAAAAAAFcU/hSgZW0hecU4/s400/andy-warhol-oxidation-painting-1978.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5520161124033506402" />
Working with his studio assistant Ronnie Cutrone on the Oxidations, Warhol experimented with the catalytic reaction of urine and metallic paints to create brilliant golds and acidic greens that radiate across richly textured surfaces. By urinating on the canvas, he succeeded in creating the “physical presence” to which he aspired in painting and simultaneously parodied the act of painting. The Oxidations were the first abstractions that Warhol produced and reveal his fascination with and envy of the Abstract Expressionist painters, who had dominated the New York art scene during Warhol’s early career in the 1950s with their active and gestural approach to painting.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4818726331789536855.post-85483501666630260472010-09-23T10:18:00.000-07:002010-09-23T10:19:28.996-07:00'Jane Fonda' by Andy Warhol (1982) in high resolution<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 311px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_FpkvrKlCScY/TJuMArsMUzI/AAAAAAAAFcM/up_czqg45kQ/s400/andy-warhol-jane-fonda-1982.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5520159711628645170" />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4818726331789536855.post-57097685177587863502010-09-23T10:14:00.000-07:002010-09-23T10:16:39.780-07:00'Telephone' by Andy Warhol (1962) in high resolution<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_FpkvrKlCScY/TJuLOopxnBI/AAAAAAAAFcE/samAQKx5VI8/s400/andy-warhol-telephone-1962.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5520158851819740178" />

In 1962, Andy Warhol abandoned his commercial illustration work and made Telephone, a straightforward black-and-white painting of an antiquated telephone. One of many hand-painted representations of quotidian objects the artist made during the early 1960s, it evolved out of his interest in elevating commercial imagery to fine-art status, and that positioned him at the forefront of the Pop art movement.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4818726331789536855.post-11897308582040040902010-03-26T03:25:00.000-07:002010-03-26T03:26:15.655-07:00Andy Warhol biographyAndy Warhol was born Andrew Warhola (Rusyn: Андрій Варгола) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1928. He was the third child of his Slovak parents - Andrej and Ulja Warhola. His parents were working class immigrants of Rusyn ethnicity from Mikova, the Austro-Hungarian Empire (now in north-eastern part of Slovakia). Andy Warhol's father immigrated to the United States in 1914, and his mother joined him in 1921 after the death of the grandparents. Warhol's father worked at a coal mine. The family lived at 55 Beelen Street and later at 3252 Dawson Street in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. The family was Byzantine Catholic and attended St. John Chrysostom Byzantine Catholic Church. Andy Warhol had two older brothers, John (Jan) and Paul (Paul), who were born in present-day Slovakia. Paul's son James Warhola, became a successful children's book illustrator.
In third grade, Warhol had St. Vitus' dance a disease of the nervous system, causing involuntary movements of limbs, which is believed to be a complication of scarlet fever and causes skin pigmentation blotchiness. He became a hypochondriac, developing the fear of hospitals and doctors. He was often bed-ridden as a child, and became an outcast among his schoolmates and bonded strongly with his mother. While in bed, he listened to the radio and collected photos of movie stars around his bed. Warhol later described this period as a very important role in the development of his personality, skill set and preferences.

In 1945 Andy Warhol entered the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) where he majored in pictorial design. In 1949, he moved to New York City and began a successful career in magazine illustration and advertising.

During 1950, he was famous for extraordinary ink drawings of shoes advertisement. This were done in a free, blotted ink style, and appeared in some of his early showings in New York's Bodley Gallery. With a simultaneous rapid expansion of the recording industry and the introduction of vinyl records, Hi-Fi, and stereophonic recordings, RCA Records hired Warhol, and another freelance artist, Sid Maurer, to design album covers and promotional materials.

Throughout the 1950s, Warhol enjoyed a successful career as a commercial artist, winning several commendations from the Art Director's Club and the American Institute of Graphic Arts. In these early years, he shortened his name to "Warhol." In 1952, the artist had his first individual show at the Hugo Gallery, exhibiting Fifteen Drawings Based on the Writings of Truman Capote. His work was exhibited in several other venues during the 1950s, including his first group show at The Museum of Modern Art in 1956.

His first solo exhibition in the gallery as a fine artist was on 9 July 1962, at Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles, California. The exhibition marked the West Coast debut of pop art. Andy Warhol's first solo Pop exhibition in New York was hosted atthe site stable Eleanor Ward Gallery on 6-24 November 1962. The exhibition included the works: Marilyn Diptych, 100 Soup Banks, 100 Coke Bottles and 100 Dollar Bills. At the Stable Gallery exhibition, the artist first met John Giorno who would star in Warhol first film, 'Sleep', in 1963.

In the 1960's that Warhol began to make paintings of the cult American products, such as Campbell's Soup Cans from the Campbell Soup Company and Coca-Cola bottles, as well as paintings of famous people such as Marilyn Monroe, Troy Donahue, and Elizabeth Taylor. He founded the "Factory", his studio during these years, and gathered around himself a wide range of artists, writers, musicians and underground celebrities. He started production of prints using silk screen printing method. His work became popular and controversial.

A keystone event was the 1964 exhibit 'The American Supermarket', a show held in Paul Bianchini's Upper East Side Gallery. The exhibition was presented as a typical U.S. small supermarket environment, except that all of its products, canned food, meat, posters on the walls, etc. were created by six prominent pop artists of the time, including the controversial Billy Apple, Mary Inman, and Robert Watts. Warhol painting of a Campbell soup can cost $1500, and each autographed soup can sold for $6. The exhibition was one of the first mass events that directly confronted with the general public with both pop-art and immortal question of what is art.

As an advertisement illustrator in the 1950's, Warhol used assistants to increase his productivity. Collaboration will be the defining (and controversial) aspect of his working methods throughout his career, in the 1960's it was especially important. One of the most important collaborators during this period was Gerard Malanga. Malanga assisted the artist with producing silkscreens, films, sculptures and other works at 'The Factory', Warhol's aluminum foil-and-silver-paint-lined studio on 47th Street (later moved to Broadway). Other members of Warhol Factory crowd included Freddie Herko, Ondine, Ronald Tavel, Mary Woronov, Billy Name, Brigid Berlin (from whom he apparently got the idea of the tape recording of his telephone conversations).

In July of 1968 the pop artist was shot two to three times into his chest by a woman named Valerie Solanis. Andy was seriously wounded and only narrowly escaped death. Valerie Solanis had worked occasionally for the artist in the Factory. Solanis had founded a group named SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men) and she was its sole member. When Valerie Solanis was arrested the day after, her words were "He had too much control over my life". Warhol never recovered completely from his wounds and had to wear a bandage around his waist for the rest of his life. After this assassination attempt the pop artist made a radical turn in his process of producing art. The philosopher of art mass production now spent most of his time making individual portraits of the rich and affluent of his time like Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson or Brigitte Bardot. Warhol began publishing 'Interview' magazine and renewed his focus on painting. Works created in the 1970's include Maos, Skulls, Hammer and Sickles, Torsos and Shadows and many commissioned portraits. Warhol also published The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (from A to B and Back Again). Firmly established as a major 20th-century artist and international celebrity, Warhol exhibited his work extensively in museums and galleries around the world. Warhol used to socialize at various nightspots in New York City, including Max's Kansas City, Serendipity 3 and, later in the '70s, Studio 54. He was generally regarded as quiet, shy, and a meticulous observer. Art critic Robert Hughes called him 'the white mole of Union Square.'

Warhol experienced re-emergence of critical and financial success in the 1980's, partly because of his affiliation and friendships with a number of prolific younger artists, who dominated the 'bull market' in New York Art: Jean-Michel Basquiat , Julian Schnabel, David Salle and other so-called Neo-expressionists, as well as members of the Council Transavantgarde movement in Europe, including Francesco Clemente and Enzo Cucchi. He also created two cable television shows, "Andy Warhol's TV" in 1982 and "Andy Warhol's Fifteen Minutes" for MTV in 1986. His paintings from the 1980s include The Last Suppers, Rorschachs and, in a return to his first great theme of Pop, a series called Ads.

Following routine gall bladder surgery, Andy Warhol died February 22, 1987. After his burial in Pittsburgh, his friends and associates organized a memorial mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York that was attended by more than 2,000 people.

Биография Энди Уорхола на русском>>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4818726331789536855.post-11158929404014834792010-03-25T09:36:00.000-07:002010-03-25T09:45:42.628-07:00Dennis Hopper accuses his wife of stealing his portrait made by Andy Warhol<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 393px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_FpkvrKlCScY/S6uSpDuqTXI/AAAAAAAAFX8/sltJe9r_RCg/s400/warhol-dennis-hopper-1971.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5452613007935425906" />
While some reports suggest that Dennis Hopper is in bad health (the actor weighs only 100 pounds, according to his doctor, and is unable to participate in long conversations) he's not too weak to accuse his wife, Victoria Duffy, of stealing $1.5-million worth of his art, including a portrait of him done by Andy Warhol.

In the end of October last year Hopper's battle with prostate cancer became public. We might also see the 10 1/2-foot-tall painting as paralleling compositionally the layout of a fan letter: It reads irresistibly from top left to bottom right.

Though the movie "National Velvet" (1944) was in color, Warhol used black on a silver ground to suggest the proverbial "silver screen," the fading of the moviegoer's memories and the star's inevitable eclipse by time. (Taylor was rumored to be dying of cancer in London when Warhol made the painting.) He symbolically fended off that eclipse by reiterating the same source image, and acknowledged it by letting the silkscreen clog and run dry as he reused it.

"National Velvet" shows why critics increasingly concur that Warhol did his best work in the early '60s: All his obsessions - with stardom, anesthetic repetition, sexual ambiguity and the incursion of low content into high art - stand exposed here and oddly poised.

Via SfgateUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4818726331789536855.post-34180626205118386142010-02-25T08:28:00.000-08:002010-02-25T08:31:09.997-08:00Tucson Museum of Art Exhibition
Andy Warhol once told an interviewer that he ate a sandwich and Campbell's condensed soup every day while he and his brothers were growing up in Pittsburgh.

Of course, he often made up stories and told outright lies when confronted by reporters, but this story was largely confirmed by one of his brothers.

Andy, the baby, always got to pick which flavor of soup it would be.

He painted every flavor for his first solo exhibition in 1962.

"Nobody can look at a Campbell's soup can, with that simple red and white label, and not have an emotional connection to it," said Julie Sasse, chief curator at the Tucson Museum of Art.

"Warhol made it very clear how images can trigger things in us, and for that reason he's a genius."

Sasse, whose specialty is modern and contemporary art, said Warhol and other pop artists sought to demystify art.

"They were saying that everyday culture, things that are around us, can be just as powerful, just as moving, as the imagery being produced by a select group of abstract expressionists at the time."

Sasse, now in her 10th year at the TMA, confirmed that there will be soup cans in the exhibition "Andy Warhol Portfolios: Life & Legends," which opens Saturday and runs through July 3.

Museum-goers will see a lot of work from the 1970s and 1980s, Sasse said. Andy selected this image of Jackie Kennedy from eight close-up photographs of the First Lady in dramatic focus, and used it as the emotional barometer of the Kennedy assassination of 22 Nov 1963. The resulting image in Warhol’s silkscreen produces the effect of transforming the historical narrative into a series of affective moments or portraits that register the subject over time. Warhol's Jackies series emphasize the artist’s fascination with portraiture as a true form of biography and arguably are his most powerful and evocative body of works. This iconic work on Plexiglas from the 1960s is a prime example of Warhol’s artistic process that has never before been offered at auction.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4818726331789536855.post-7043240871789060902010-02-02T13:47:00.000-08:002010-02-02T13:52:47.180-08:00Warhol photos donated to US Universities and colleges
Photos belonging to artist Andy Warhol - valued at $28m (£17m) - have been donated to colleges and university museums across the US.

The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, based in New York, said the collection included celebrity snapshots, still lifes and nudes.

It is thought a lot of the pictures helped inspire his work.

Curator of the foundation, Jenny Moore, said: "This is something he would have been very exited about."

She added: "This is a little-known body of Warhol's work.

"I think most people are familiar with the paintings, and even the sculptures, and we really wanted the chance to let a broader audience gain access to his photographic work, which is of course the basis of so much of his artistic production."

More than 180 colleges, university museums and galleries have benefited.

Each of the institutions has received about 100 polaroid and 50 black-and-white photos from the 1970s and 1980s.

source: bbc
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4818726331789536855.post-46998792266185646252010-01-28T11:05:00.000-08:002010-01-28T11:10:15.568-08:00'Andy Warhol: Fashionistas and Celebrities' in the University of Vermont Fleming Museum
January 19 - April 25, 2010
Wilbur Room

Building on a recent gift to the Fleming Museum from the Andy Warhol Foundation of rarely-seen photographs and Polaroids, Andy Warhol: Fashionistas and Celebrities presents a select group of these images, which offer a glimpse into the world of fashion and celebrity from the 1970s and 1980s. Collectively they position Warhol as a figure at the nexus of a world where art, fashion, and celebrity converged.

The show includes photographs of such fashion icons as Halston, Carolina Herrara, Gianni Versace, Giorgio Armani, Calvin Klein, and Diane von Furstenberg, among others, and will highlight Warhol's impact or influence upon their careers. Celebrity likenesses include those of Muhammad Ali, Paul Anka, Henry Fonda, Henry Kissinger, and Dracula, as well as a host of artists including Georgia O'Keefe, and Gilbert and George. For Warhol, photography was more than a medium indexical to the real; it was a fictionalizing tool that represented the very aspirations on which Warhol based his career: it could actively manufacture celebrity and, ultimately, identity itself. Fashion has a similar transformative power.

Fleming Museum: 61 Colchester Avenue, Burlington, Vermont 05405 USA
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4818726331789536855.post-55974003288331106362010-01-27T08:06:00.000-08:002010-01-27T08:12:03.617-08:00"Ten Portraits of 20th Century Jews" donated to the museum
A Jewish American collector has donated Andy Warhol's series "Ten Portraits of 20th Century Jews" to Tel Aviv's Diaspora Museum , museum curator Hagai Segev said.

Warhol, the American painter and avant-garde filmmaker who was one of the preeminent figures of American Pop Art, painted his portraits of Jewish cultural luminaries in the late 1970s.

The portraits, originally published as a portfolio of silkscreen prints on paper, are of Sarah Bernhardt, Louis Brandeis, Martin Buber, Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud, George Gershwin, Franz Kafka, the Marx Brothers, Golda Meir and Gertrude Stein. Properly speaking, New Coke had no separate name of its own, but was simply known as "the new taste of Coca-Cola" until 1992 when it was renamed Coca-Cola II.

Public reaction to the change was poor, and the new cola was a major marketing failure. The subsequent reintroduction of Coke's original formula has been suspected to have resulted in a significant gain in sales.

A Caffeine Free New Coca-Cola version was also introduced at the same time. It was replaced by Caffeine Free Coca-Cola classic in 1990, which was the original 1983-1985 Caffeine Free Coca-Cola formula.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4818726331789536855.post-33850449992069275282009-10-09T01:22:00.000-07:002009-10-09T01:27:37.954-07:00'Jackie II' by Andy Warhol (1966) in high resolution<img style="float:left; Although the first two rounds missed, the third passed through Warhol's left lung, spleen, stomach, liver, esophagus and right lung. Solanas then turned the gun on a companion of Warhol, Mario Amaya, injuring his thigh. Although Warhol survived these injuries, he never fully recovered. Solanas later explained that "he had too much control over my life."
